Criteria for Selection

The Award Committee will consider the following criteria:

CriteriaDescriptionMarking rubrics
Main criteria for Judging the iCON Best Paper Awards
Originality and Novelty (10 points)The value of a paper is a function of the degree to which it presents new or novel material. Does the paper present results previously unknown? Does it push forward the frontiers of knowledge? Does it present new methods for solving old problems or new viewpoints on old problems? Or, on the other hand, is it a re-hash of information already known?
  • 10 – Trailblazing
  • 8 –  A pioneering piece of work
  • 6 –  One step ahead of the pack
  • 4 –  Yet another paper about…
  • 2 – It’s been said many times before
Scientific method/ Quality and Contribution to the field of HPE (10 points)

The value of a paper is a function of the degree of excellence of the work described and to which it represents an overall contribution to the advancement of health professions education.

Was the work performed, or the study made with a high degree of thoroughness? Or, on the other hand, is the work described pretty much of a run-of-the-mill nature?

  • 10 – Excellent work of major contribution to the field
  • 8 –  Good solid work Of some importance
  • 6 –  Solid work of Marginal contribution
  • 4 –  Marginal work  of Very minor  contribution
  • 2 –  Very questionable work with No discernible contribution
Presentation including the use of AV aids and Virtual platform (10 points)The value of the paper is a function of the ease with which the listeners can determine what the author is trying to present. Regardless of the other criteria, a paper is not good unless the material is presented clearly and effectively with appropriate AV aids and use of the virtual platform.
  • 10 – Excellent presentation with appropriate use of AV aids and platform; clearly conveying the concepts
  • 8 –  Good presentation; effective use of AV aids and platform
  • 6 – Of Acceptable clarity and effectiveness
  • 4 – Marginal effectiveness; poor use of the media
  • 2 – Questionable effectiveness; fumbles with technology
Ability to answer questions and defend the work (10 points)Is he/she able to give clear response to the questions posed and be able to defend the work?
  • 10: Very good
  • 8: Basically well answered
  • 6: Acceptable
  • 4: Needs considerable work
  • 2: Unacceptably bad
                                                                                                          Meta-criterion (10 points)
Meta-criterion that is specifically applied to the Best Paper Award category is that the winner of the award should be a paper that substantiates a new and novel idea or approach contributing to the cumulative knowledge base of the field and is likely to inspire fellow scholars in their pedagogic practice, as opposed to just grinding out yet another example of a well-known approach or result (even if the study was neatly conducted and reported). In other words, it is the “WOW”
factor that we hope to see in the winning paper.
  • 10: Trailblazing
  • 8: A pioneering piece of work
  • 6: One step ahead of the pack
  • 4: Yet another paper about…
  • 2: It’s been said many times before
