ABOUT THE THEME
Assessment in health professions education serves multiple purposes, including academic certification, quality assurance, facilitating student learning, fostering lifelong self-regulated learning, and ensuring employability). To achieve these goals, we must assess our students holistically, providing them with opportunities to apply their knowledge and skills in realistic and meaningful contexts.
Authentic Assessment involves designing assignments that immerse students in challenging scenarios or roles akin to what they would face in their professional lives. These tasks require them to apply their skills and knowledge to meet professional standards. The emphasis lies in application and real-world experiences, similar to professional practice opportunities. By confronting complex and ambiguous real-life tasks, students ability to understand and synthesize relevant information, drawing upon their skills and personal experiences to devise solutions, is put to the test.
Incorporating such tasks into course learning activities and high-stakes exams fosters more thoughtful learning among students. When students can find purpose in their assignments and take ownership of their learning, they can demonstrate their true capabilities and knowledge. Authentic assessments are often more engaging, interesting, and motivating for students due to their relevance, while also cultivating lifelong learners equipped with employability skills. As educators, we can leverage assessments to scaffold and nurture our students, checking their understanding and providing feedback for improvement.
